San Francisco, California

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
San Francisco never fails to amaze visitors and tourists not only because of its colorful history but because it evolved as the most liberal city in the United States.

Looking at San Francisco in terms of land area, the city is surprisingly small though it has the highest concentration of population density among all the major cities in the United States. In fact it maintained its stature as the fourth largest city in California and the 14th most populous in the nation.

The original inhabitants of the area were the Ohlone Indians, but were replaced by Spanish settlers in 1776 with the establishment of a mission named after St. Francis of Assisi. Gold was discovered in the Sierra foothills and the rip-roaring gold rush of 1846 followed. So for the next 50 years, pioneers and travelers converted San Francisco from a wasteland into a burgeoning supply center and transit town.

The devastating earthquake of 1906 cut short San Francisco's golden age, because of the three days fire that burned the city to the ground. Literally, San Francisco rose from the ashes, and a city much more magnificent developed. It was in the 1920s and 30s that visible landmarks such as the Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bay Bridge was constructed.

After the 2nd World War, San Francisco continued its cultural distinction particularly with the emergence of the Beats in the 50s and the Hippies in the 60s that saw the fusion of music, protest, rebellion, and so do with drugs. This movement was exemplified with the "Summer of Love" in 1967 a gathering that happened around the Haight-Ashbury district.

Tourists who come to San Francisco are always riveted to the mysterious fog that envelops the city even during the day. Arguably San Francisco is the most beautiful, compact and a really approachable place. It is characterized by the impossible gradients of its downtown streets that reveal a dazzling view of the city, the bay and beyond. To top it all, the temperature of the city is moderate to seldom exceed the 70's and even at the height of summer it could even drop much lower.

Book a flight to San Francisco now and join the thousands who are always mesmerized by the mist and amenities that distinguish the city.
